The institute has since its very early stage pursued an extensive academic contacts with their countries. This development has achieved a significant progress especially in research collaboration. The primary achievement in recent year is the transnational research project of Ecological Energetic Evolution of Urban System during the period of 1993 and 1995.

This two-year program was funded by the Gian Gen Kuo foundation in Taiwan and undertaken by professor Huang of this institute and professor Odum of Environmental Policy Center, Florida University. At the moment, we have raised funds from British Trade and Cultural Office for another three-year international collaboration project from January 1999 to December 2001. Our research partner is University of Liverpool, Pacific Asia Research Institute. This project is focused on the regional distribution of Taiwan investment in China, and its impacts on surplus rural labour and sub-municipal economies.
