The Graduate Institute of Urban Planning (GIUP) in the National Taipei University (NTPU) was established in 1968 in the former Chung-Hsing University (one of the predecessors of the present NTPU). It will soon became 40 years old, and in fact was the first Graduate Institute in urban plannning to be established in Taiwan. When founded it began with a Master program, and expanded to the current Ph.D. program in 1991.

The Institute believes that urban planning is a comprehensive professional discipline that requires excellent undergraduate students in order for them to benefit fully from the studies that the Institute offers. It therefore encourages applications from well-qualified undergraduates with degrees in subjects related to spatial affairs, and who are interested in planning as a profeesional career. It promotes the subject at postgraduate level because it believes the success of its students comes from the maturity and professionalism that postgraduate education alone can provide.

Up to now, we have produced more than 400 graduates at postgraduate level, of which over 40 have obtained their PhD. Many of our master students have gone on for further studies overseas, while the institute has proved a major source of recruits to government, private consultancy and universities throughout Taiwan. The Institute is proud to continue to make a significant contribution to the esteem concerning urban and rural planning which is fully recognized in this country.
