Liberal Arts education plays a very important role in
a comprehensive university. Thus comes the College of Humanities.
Expanded from a former General Education Department (including Sections
of Chinese, Foreign Languages, and History), College of Law and Commerce,
National Chung Hsing University, many departments and graduate institutes
thus come into being, including Department of Chinese, Department
of Foreign Languages & Applied Linguistics, Department of History,
Center for International Negotiations and Interpreations Graduate
Institute of Civilian Arts and Graduate Institute of Classic Philosophy.
The ultimate educational mission of the College shows that education
should return to human-orientation, realizing the idea of human
civilization. We are to nurture leaders across the century, who
are best equipped with human disciplines and with bright visions
of the future-as well as the professional, technology-based and
modern professionals in literature, history and languages.

| Prospects in the Future : |
| We help to promote the cultural activities in the areas
of San Xia and Ying Ge. The teaching and research on campus will extend,
and thus, be integrated, into the regular festivals of humanistic
arts. A long-term exhibition space will be reserved. Various types
of exhibition on cultural activities will be held on a regular basis
in the hope that we could stimulate more researches for the residents
in the San Xia and Ying Ge areas and further in the northern part
of Taiwan.
The Graduate Institute of Classic Philosophy is going to accept
applicants starting the academic year 2002. Still on the way is
Graduate Institute of Taiwanese Languages, which will be on our
University schedule in the academic year 2003. We are also thinking
seriously of the establishment of the departments of Pottery Arts,
Music & Drama and Philosophy to construct a complete set of
College of Humanities.
As part of the whole planning of the University to meet the need
pedagogy, we now have a professional Lab for Negotiation and Oral
Interpretation, a multi-media resources classroom, a project exhibition
room and a performance arts center. The University Museum, Literature
& History File Room and Language Center are also on the blue
print.
We will integrate the College of Humanities into the local community,
enriching characteristic of community features and devoting to lifelong
education.
We will upgrade the teaching faculty of the College, merging the
best human resources available from various departments and graduate
institutes for an improved academic performance.
A distance teaching system will soon be set up, making it much
easier to exert academic exchange with renowned universities and
institutes-home and abroad. |

Department of Chinese Languages
and Literature |
|
| In the Department of Chinese, equivalent emphasis is
placed on what is traditional vs. modern, theoretical vs. practical,
Overall vs. Local, Comparative vs. abstruse. We stress the integration
of languages and information technology as well as the cultivation
of language skills, opening a wide range of job options for the students.
The department is specialized in rendering the Chinese language technologicalized,
localized, practicalized, and modernized. |

Graduate Institute of Folk
Arts |
|
| Arts theories and ways of how to put them into practice
receive equivalent emphasis at this institute. In order to have a
more complete picture of folklore arts, we invite senior entertainers
and artists (such as winners of Ethnic Festivals or Heritage Award,
winners of Folklore Workmanship Award, winners of Lifelong Achievement
in Folklore Arts and Special Contribution) to perform a series of
lectures and projects-collaborated work contributed by both scholars
and professional technicians. The curricula cover all kinds of folklore
arts theories and practice, which consist of workmanship, fine arts,
music, traditional dramas and customs. The Institute will introduce
diverse kinds of arts-oriented theories: folklore and anthropology
at home and abroad for introspection. We hope to initiate theoretical
discussions on folklore arts and thus build the theoretical background
for the study. With special emphasis on spatial dimensions of folklore
arts, we are looking forward to building a new milestone in this
field, realizing the idea of serving the society with academic success. |
