Chung-Weun Hou, also known as Charles Hou, received his MA in sociology from Texas Christian University in 1980. He then moved to Bowling Green, Ohio, to pursue his doctorial degree. In the sociology department at Bowling Green State University, Dr. Hou was excited to eyewitness the faculties who dedicated themselves to higher working ethos. He fitted himself quickly to this mid-west environment. And he completed his doctorial degree in 1984. Professor Steven Cernkovich, director of graduate students in sociology, was his dissertation mentor. Dr. Cernkovich's professional interests in social control theory have enriched him to see the importance of good communication, family relationships, and self-concept concerning one's problem with delinquency. Dr. Hou conducted an extensive research in crime and deviance in Taiwan and had found similar conclusion with that of Dr. Cernkovich.
Charles Hou returned to Taiwan upon his graduation. He started his teaching career in the department of sociology at National Chung Hsing University. In 1990, Dr. Hou was promoted as a director for the entire evening education program. From then on, he committed himself to the administrative job until now. The Taipei Campus of National Chung Hsing University became an independent university in February of 2000, named as National Taipei University. Dr. Hou remained as the director of the evening education. In 2002, Dr. Hou accepted a position as dean of the academic affairs. Under his leadership, the university recognized his achievement in bringing good reputation and qualified students to the campus.
Dr. Hou is a life member of two academic organizations in the States, American Society of Criminology and Academic of Criminal Justice Society. He is honored as a Fulbright scholar in 1992-1993. In Taiwan, Dr. Hou is very active in criminology community. He serves as a standing member of the organizing committee. In addition to this, Dr. Hou is a committee member for the Minister of Interior Affair concerning the problems of crime and crime prevention. He is also a member of organized crime committee in Taipei City Police Bureau. He dedicates himself very much to the problems of crime and social order in Taiwan.
Dr. Hou is the 2nd and 3rd president of the university. He assumed his responsibilities on September 1, 2004. Dr. Hou is married to Dr. Lin Lin Cheng, graduated from the University of Minnesota, currently a professor of psychology at National Taipei University. Dr. Hou and his wife are the parents of Samuel Hou, an eleventh grade high school student. |
